Planting For Pollinators at Smith-Blackburn Homestead

The Smith-Blackburn Homestead is a unique property located just east of Elk Island National Park, in a region recognized by UNESCO as the Beaverhills Biosphere Reserve. The Smith Blackburn Homestead Pollinator Garden was planted in 2021 as the first act of reclamation of an area previously disturbed by human activity (this area used to contain an old cattle corral). In late 2021, we planted a further 110 trees and shrubs in the area surrounding the garden to provide extra habitat for wildlife and shade out invasive species. This area would benefit from more native trees and shrubs, so we are going to plant again this fall.

To learn more about the native pollinator garden and the process of building it, read this blog!

This event will be focusing on planting native shrubs and trees to the area surrounding the pollinator garden. All tools and supplies will be provided for this event but you may bring your own work gloves if you wish. We will finish up by 4:30pm. The neighbour has been kind to offer the use of a port-a-potty for volunteers at this event.
