Pollinator Garden Planting at Smith Blackburn Homestead

Smith Blackburn Homestead is located in the Beaver Hills UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional gathering place, travelling route and home for many Indigenous Peoples. The Smith Homestead was just opened to the public last fall, and we are excited to welcome visitors and volunteers to this wonderful land!

This year, we are going to try something different - we are going to plant a pollinator garden to support a diversity of pollinators and replace an area overrun by invasive plants with a healthy native ecosystem. We have prepared the site, and are now ready to plant. We have dozens of forbs to be planted, so we need your help! If you are ready to get your hands and knees dirty and plant this pollinator garden with us, please join us.

We will meet at the Smith Blackburn Homestead at 10:30 am, and leave the site by 3:00 pm. Wear appropriate footwear and long pants, and bring a lunch, water, hat, sunscreen/bugspray, and a camera or binoculars if you'd like. If you have your own gardening tools and gloves to bring we recommend that you do so, but otherwise tools and gloves will be provided. Additional information will be sent to you several days in advance of the event.

While we resume our volunteer stewardship events, we are committed to implementing actions to comply with public health measures and workplace guidance to reduce risk of COVID-19 among staff, volunteers, and the general public. We will also be implementing updated EALT health and safety policies and procedures to support a safe work and volunteer environment. We thank you for your understanding and support as we roll out these safety measures.

Stewardship events are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.
