Wind the Wire for Wildlife at Coates

Coates is a stunning EALT Conservation Land that features beautiful mixed wood forest, steep valley, a creek, and history (fossils!). There are some old remnants of barbed wire and scrap metal that have become entwined into the surrounding ground and vegetation, posing a risk to wildlife and visitors alike. At this event, we will be removing the wire and scrap metal from the land. We may also do some light trail maintenance and other stewardship tasks as needed.

We will meet at Coates at 9:30 AM, and leave the site by 2:30 PM at the latest. Since we will be handling metal, please wear long sleeves and long pants and appropriate footwear for hiking. Bring a lunch, water, hat, and a camera or binoculars if you'd like. If you have your own gloves to bring we recommend that you do so, but otherwise tools and gloves will be provided. For this event, gloves should be thick and heavy-duty. Additional information will be sent to you several days in advance of the event.

UPDATE: In support of public health and the health and safety of EALT staff and volunteers, EALT is requiring proof of vaccination for our stewardship events. Please plan ahead by saving a digital copy of your vaccination record on your phone or printing it out and bringing your record to the event.

If you have not yet completed your second dose, please plan to join a stewardship event once you are fully vaccinated. If you have a medical exemption or have youth under 12 who are not yet eligible for the vaccine, please contact EALT in advance of registration.

For more information on accessing your vaccination records, visit https://www.alberta.ca/covid19-vaccine.aspx. You can download or print your record in the express system at: https://www.albertavaccinerecord.ca/#/

We thank you for supporting public health and the health of EALT staff and volunteers in this challenging time.

Other notes:

Stewardship events are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Please note that the Coates Conservation Land trail does include several sets of wooden stairs.
