Weeding for Wildlife at Smith Blackburn Homestead

Smith Blackburn Homestead is located in the Beaver Hills UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional gathering place, travelling route and home for many Indigenous Peoples. This beautiful land is located just east of Elk Island National Park, and is home to moose, deer, and many other species of wildlife.

Our primary challenge at this land is controlling invasive plant species. This year, we are tackling this from a number of angles to make the biggest possible impact. We will be mowing, weed whacking, and hand pulling weeds on this land. We can use your help to hand pull and clip Canada thistle and white cockle on sections of the land that are not practical to control using other methods.

We will meet at the Smith Blackburn Homestead at 9:30 am, and leave the site by 2:30 pm. Wear appropriate footwear and long pants, and bring a lunch, water, hat, sunscreen/bugspray, and a camera or binoculars if you'd like. If you have your own gardening tools and gloves to bring we recommend that you do so, but otherwise tools and gloves will be provided. Additional information will be sent to you several days in advance of the event.

While we resume our volunteer stewardship events, we are committed to implementing actions to comply with public health measures and workplace guidance to reduce risk of COVID-19 among staff, volunteers, and the general public. We will also be implementing updated EALT health and safety policies and procedures to support a safe work and volunteer environment. We thank you for your understanding and support as we roll out these safety measures.

Stewardship events are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.
