Shrub Planting for Pollinators at the Smith Blackburn Homestead

Smith Blackburn Homestead is located in the Beaver Hills UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is a unique area full of natural habitat for many species of wildlife. Earlier this year, we started a new project at this land - a native pollinator garden!

The pollinator garden is well underway. Over 250 native plants have been planted in the garden and cardboard and mulch have been placed on the soil to prevent weeds, preserve moisture, and protect the young plants as they establish in the new environment.

We have an opportunity to do another round of planting in the fall, and we need your help! At this event we will focus mainly on planting native shrubs around the pollinator garden, and we may plant a few more native forbs as well.

If you are ready to get dirty to support the conservation of our native pollinators, please join us!

We will meet at the Smith Blackburn Homestead at 10:00 AM and leave the site by 3:00 PM. Wear appropriate footwear and long pants, and bring a lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, bugspray, and a camera or binoculars if you'd like. If you have your own gardening gloves or tools to bring we recommend that you do so, but otherwise tools and gloves will be provided. Additional information will be sent to you several days in advance of the event.

Stewardship events are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.
