Nest Boxes and Signs at Smith Blackburn Homestead

This event will be a double feature at the Smith Blackburn Homestead! We maintain almost 40 bird boxes for House Wrens, Chickadees, and Tree Swallows at the homestead. Each year we clean out our boxes to prevent the spread of mites, and now it is time to do so. We could use a hand to carry tools, fresh sawdust, and help clean out old nesting material.

Our second activity for the day will be sign installation. Staff have been hard at work to arrange for the public opening of the land, and we hope that time will be soon! We installed 19 signs earlier this year, including map signs, private property signs, directional signs, and trail name signs. We now have the rest of our signs and posts ready to be installed, and we could use your help.

This event will involve carrying various materials, but the more helpers we have, the lighter the load.

We will meet at the Smith Blackburn Homestead at 9:30 am, and leave the site by 3 pm. Wear appropriate footwear and long pants, and bring a lunch, water, hat, sunscreen/bugspray, and a camera or binoculars if you'd like. If you have your own gloves to bring we recommend that you do so, but otherwise tools and gloves will be provided. Additional information will be sent to you several days in advance of the event.

While we resume our volunteer stewardship events, we are committed to implementing actions to comply with public health measures and workplace guidance to reduce risk of COVID-19 among staff, volunteers, and the general public. We will also be implementing updated EALT health and safety policies and procedures to support a safe work and volunteer environment. Please read our guidelines for volunteering during COVID-19 here. We thank you for your understanding and support as we roll out these safety measures.

Stewardship events are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.
