Our vision and mission guide us to conserve and steward land in Edmonton and area. We’ve broken them down to show you what we’re all about:
Our Vision:
“A network of forests, river valleys, wetlands, lakes, and farmlands in Edmonton and area is conserved as a legacy for future generations.”
“A Network…
Connecting Edmonton and area with a healthy system of natural spaces, or ecological network, is important for many reasons. In Edmonton, where our landscape is becoming increasingly fragmented or broken apart, this system bridges urban and rural land, provides sanctuaries for wildlife and vegetation, supports natural processes and links people with the natural world.
of forests…
Aspen parkland and Boreal mixwood forest characterize the Edmonton area. These forests are important carbon-sinks, help mitigate climate change, and support biodiversity.
river valleys…
Edmonton and area has multiple river and creek valleys. These are wildlife corridors and riparian ecosystems that provide critical food and shelter for birds and animals. They also include important historic, archaeological and cultural sites.
wetlands, lakes…
Wetlands and lakes regulate water levels and manage water quality. They also support aquatic flora and fauna and are important staging areas for migrating waterfowl.
and farmlands…
Prime agriculture lands in and around Edmonton provide a source of local food and help connect people to the lands that sustain us.
in Edmonton and area…
Our operating area spans a 150 kilometer radius of Edmonton and is a mix of urban, suburban, rural, country residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial land uses.
is conserved…
We see conservation as protecting lands, in perpetuity, for people and biodiversity. We conserve ecologically-important lands and lands that, in addition to ecological value, also have social, cultural, agricultural, or recreation value.
as a legacy for future generations.”
We do this for today and for generations to come, human and wild.
Our Mission:
“We conserve nature in Edmonton and area, engaging people and communities in land conservation and stewardship.”
“We conserve nature in Edmonton and area…
We conserve a collection of ecosystems in Edmonton and area. Connecting these landscapes contributes to the health of our natural world and well-being of people and our community.
engaging people and communities…
Inspiring people to join us in protecting forests, river valleys, wetlands, lakes, and farmlands motivates us each and every day. We connect volunteers, funders, donors, and municipalities with opportunities to make a local impact.
in land conservation and stewardship.”
Forward-thinking landowners with a vision for conservation kick start our work. We secure land primarily through land donations and conservation easements, working with land owners to ensure a sustainable future for their lands. These lands are diligently managed for their health and endurance. And, we encourage, educate, and engage members of our community in this ongoing maintenance year-round.
