Boisvert’s Greenwoods, located northeast of Morinville, has been stewarded by EALT for 11 years. Unique in the sense that it’s an island of forest among an ocean of agricultural land, this property serves as a crucial stepping stone for wildlife in the region.
Boisvert’s Greenwoods is encircled by a barbed wire fence, and over the years, the fence has been degraded to a point where it now serves as a potential risk to visitors, human and animal alike. This event will focus on removing strands of wire that are in disrepair or are no longer needed. We will focus on the East and North boundary fences, and potentially the South boundary, all of which border on agricultural fields.
What to wear and bring:
Layers appropriate for the conditions (rain pants, middle layers)
We suggest wearing old clothes, as rips may occur due to contact with barbs
Jeans and long sleeves are best to avoid scratches
Extra socks
Waterproof, sturdy footwear
Water and a lunch (backpack recommended)
Accessibility
Anticipate a generally high level of physical exertion for this event. Activities will include:
Bushwhacking to access sections of fence
This includes stepping over sections of fence, and stepping over downed trees in potentially wet areas
Using hand tools to pry, cut, and bend barbed wire (tools and heavy-duty gloves provided)
Winding up strands of barbed wire for disposal
Carrying personal supplies for the day (water, layers, snacks, etc.) in your backpack
